| Abstract Scope |
Cold spray processing is a solid-state consolidation process that is
attractive for coatings and repairs, however a lesser focus has been on
building near-net shaped parts – i.e. Cold Spray Additive Manufacturing
(CSAM). 316L stainless steel is a strong candidate for CSAM due to its
ubiquitous use for structural applications where a combination of high
strength and corrosion resistance are needed. 316L stainless
steel's inherent ductility, which promotes particle deformation/bonding, and its compatibility with air as a carrier gas in lieu of more expensive gases are significant advantages. This study focuses on mapping out the effect of processing parameters during cold spray on deposit properties. The gas temperature and feed rate were varied, and the deposits were sectioned among different zones to evaluate local microstructure. Electron microscopy and mechanical testing were leveraged to characterize strain and bonding at the different spray parameters. These results will be presented and discussed. |
