Abstract Scope |
University academic research is at the forefront of sustainability initiatives and technology through chemical, synthetic, materials, and engineering breakthroughs. However, while academic groups have revolutionary ideas for sustainability, they often do not consider their innovations' emission data, environmental impact, and their own individual laboratory practices. To circumvent the poor procurement practices of researchers and their research institutes, this work details the process of creating an analytics dashboard for the chemical inventory emission data of the Case School of Engineering and the challenges/benefits associated with developing new infrastructure for sustainable R&D. The procurement data analytics dashboard suggested will use three accessible software platforms: Tableau (visualization), MongoDB(storage), and OpenLCA(emission data). Readily accessible emission analytics will allow laboratories to implement a life cycle assessment research culture, set goals and restrictions on habitual and unnecessary waste, execute sustainability interventions, incite green competitive practices from suppliers, and forecast the carbon footprint of research activities. |
