Molten fluoride salts are candidate heat-transfer, breeder-blanket, and fuel materials for advanced nuclear energy systems; however, an incomplete understanding of their corrosion behavior remains a key limitation. Short-circuit diffusion pathways, such as grain boundaries, are increasingly recognized as dominant corrosion sites in many alloys, though the role of grain-boundary microstructural features in the corrosion evolution remains unclear. This study investigates the influence of the exposed-surface grain orientation and grain-boundary misorientation on the evolution of corrosion in binary Ni-Cr alloys exposed to FLiNaK containing 5 wt% EuF₃. Post-exposure characterization reveals that surface orientation alone is insufficient to predict the direction of grain boundary migration. Instead, grain-boundary misorientation appears to be more strongly correlated with corrosion susceptibility, whereas the grain-boundary migration direction is likely governed by other crystallographic planes defining the boundary. These findings provide insight into grain-boundary susceptibility in molten fluoride salts and contribute to understanding grain-boundary-mediated corrosion mechanisms. |
