The distribution of Er following solution treatment plays a critical role in determining the microstructural evolution and properties of Mg-Er alloys. In this study, Atom Probe Tomography (APT) was employed to investigate the nanoscale distribution of Er in binary Mg–Er alloys after solution treatment at 500 °C. Three-dimensional atomic reconstructions revealed that Er was not completely dissolved into the Mg matrix but remained as nanoscale, solute-rich clusters despite the severe heat treatment. Iso-concentration surface analysis and compositional profiling demonstrated the size, morphology, and spatial distribution of these clusters, providing direct evidence of persistent chemical heterogeneity at the atomic scale. Complementary microstructural characterisation supported the APT observations. The results indicate that conventional solution treatment is insufficient to achieve complete Er homogenization and that residual clustering may influence subsequent precipitation, recrystallisation, and mechanical behaviour. These findings provide new insights into solute redistribution in Mg-Er alloys and the optimisation of heat-treatment strategies. |
