| Abstract Scope |
Cu-base shape-memory alloys (SMAs) are promising elastocaloric materials due to their low transformation stresses and cost. However, their crystallographic anisotropy limits the deformability and functional response of conventional polycrystalline Cu-base SMAs. Laser-powder bed fusion (LPBF) provides a unique opportunity to tailor crystallographic texture and composition to overcome these processing limitations. This study explores LPBF of Cu-Al-Mn SMAs through manipulation of thermal gradients via scan strategy and custom powder composition. Master alloys are modified with minor alloying additions to tailor composition while accounting for preferential elemental evaporation during LPBF processing. X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry quantify the resulting texture and phase transformation behavior, while the most promising processing conditions will undergo compression testing with digital image correlation to evaluate the local mechanical response and elastocaloric performance. These results establish process-structure-property relationships linking LPBF processing to crystallographic texture, phase transformation, and the functional response of Cu-base SMAs for solid-state cooling applications. |
