| Abstract Scope |
The preparation of alumina and aluminum fluoride via the thermal decomposition of AlF1.5(OH)1.5·H2O represents a critical step in the leaching of spent aluminum electrolytes using acidic aluminum-containing solutions. A thorough understanding of the thermal decomposition mechanism of AlF1.5(OH)1.5·H2O is therefore essential. In this study, the thermal behavior and structural evolution of AlF1.5(OH)1.5·H2O during heating were systematically investigated using Raman spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The results reveal that the thermal decomposition proceeds through three distinct stages: from 79.90 to 242.84 °C, the crystal water in AlF1.5(OH)1.5·H2O is eliminated, yielding AlF1.5(OH)1.5·H0.38O; from 242.84 to 426.17 °C, AlF1.5(OH)1.5·H0.38O undergoes further dehydration of residual crystal water, resulting in the formation of fully dehydrated AlF1.5(OH)1.5; and from 426.17 to 709.71 °C, AlF1.5(OH)1.5 decomposes to produce aluminum fluoride, alumina, and water. |
