| Abstract Scope |
Biochar (BC), produced by the pyrolysis of biomass under oxygen-limited conditions, has significant potential for sustainable applications in the construction industry. This study evaluated the influence of biomass feedstock, pyrolysis temperature, and milling time on the physicochemical properties of biochars produced from coffee husk, rice husk, and sugarcane bagasse. A total of 27 experimental treatments were characterized by particle density and size distribution, FE-SEM, FTIR, elemental and proximate analyses, electrical conductivity, and zeta potential. The results showed that the biomass feedstock was the primary factor influencing the properties of the biochars. Coffee husk biochar exhibited higher electrical conductivity and greater resistance to milling, which were associated with aromatic carbon structures, whereas sugarcane bagasse biochar presented a more fibrous morphology and lower electrical conductivity. The characterization demonstrated that the appropriate selection of biochar depends primarily on the biomass feedstock, making its prior characterization essential for optimizing its performance in construction materials. |
