| Abstract Scope |
The increasing use of post-consumer scrap (PCS) in wrought aluminum alloys introduces significant compositional variability, challenging conventional composition-based alloy qualification. This industrial-scale study investigates the relationships between PCS utilization, total alloying content (Alloying_sum), extrusion response, and mechanical properties in EN AW-6082. A closed-loop reference alloy was compared with multiple open-loop recycled heats produced at approximately constant PCS input. Although the PCS fraction remained unchanged, Alloying_sum varied considerably due to scrap heterogeneity. Increased alloying content resulted in higher extrusion forces and higher tensile strength, indicating increased deformation resistance during processing. Nevertheless, yield strength retention remained predominantly above 95%, demonstrating remarkable stability of the final mechanical properties. The results show that industrial thermomechanical processing effectively buffers compositional variability, preventing its direct propagation into property variability. These findings support a transition from composition-based alloy qualification toward performance-based qualification and provide quantitative evidence for robust industrial utilization of high post-consumer scrap content. |
