| Abstract Scope |
An industrial measuring campaign was conducted at Hydro Aluminium, Årdal Reference center, on 450 kA cells. The goal was to measure PFC emissions during different process conditions, including over- and underfeeding regimes, as well as anode change, bath additions, power outage, and before and during anode effect. Because alumina feeding conditions and operational events influence alumina concentration in the electrolyte and PFC emissions in aluminum electrolysis, these conditions were systematically investigated. Gas analysis was performed using canisters for Medusa GC‑MS analysis, together with FTIR and CF₄‑laser measurements for continuous monitoring. The SINTEF developed OxiSense probe was used for continuous monitoring of alumina concentration in the cell, while bath samples provided complementary offline measurements of bath chemistry. The combined offline–online datasets on gas monitoring and alumina concentration provide a robust basis for comparing measurement methods and for understanding how alumina feeding and cell operations influence PFC formation. |
