| Abstract Scope |
Metallic fuels are promising fuel type candidates for next-generation advanced reactors due to their high thermal conductivity and superior fuel utilization. While advanced fuel characterization during fabrication is crucial for fuel performance prediction and ensuring quality assurance, it also plays a key role in material control and accountability (MC&A). This work is focused on assessing the viability of a subset of advanced characterization methods, nondestructive assay (NDA) techniques, for MC&A purposes throughout the metallic fuel fabrication process. This evaluation explores proposed solutions to safeguards-relevant challenges related to inhomogeneous fuel mixtures, remote fabrication requirements, harsh processing environments, and plutonium quantification difficulties. By examining the applicability of NDA methods under these constraints, this work aims to inform the development of practical, integrated monitoring strategies to support safeguards efforts and may also serve as complementary tools to traditional advanced characterization for quality control. |
