Abstract Scope |
The ionizing radiation environment in low earth orbit (LEO) consists of trapped radiation, galactic cosmic rays and, on occasion, solar energetic particles. The intensity of this radiation varies with location in LEO with trapped radiation being encountered in the South Atlantic Anomaly while the intensity of GCRs is highest in the polar regions. SEPs, when present, are encountered primarily in the polar regions.
This environment and its variability with location and time as well as its extremes will be described. Models will be presented that allow the computation of its various components. The effects on various materials and devices will also be discussed. |
