| Abstract Scope |
Magnesium metal is used in many applications, including making lightweight structures in the automotive and aerospace sectors and improving the properties of aluminum alloy-based materials. However, the supply of this metal largely depends on other countries. Domestic used beverage cans (UBCs) have been identified as a secondary resource for magnesium, with the typical composition containing 1.8% Mg. This work utilized electrorefining in a three-layer molten salt cell with a capacity of 300 A to recover pure Mg from UBCs. The process involved the transfer of Mg from the molten UBCs pool by electrolysis to the floating Mg pool on the surface of the electrolyte as the current was passed through the cell. The results showed that all Mg in the UBCs could be recovered to produce Mg with 99.8% purity. |
