Accurate temperature and solidification fields are essential for analyzing inter-roll bulging in low-C, low-N 439 ultra-pure ferritic stainless steel. A three-dimensional heat-transfer and solidification model covering the mold and secondary-cooling zones was developed in Fluent. A constant heat-transfer-coefficient boundary and a non-uniform thermal boundary implemented via a user-defined function (UDF) were compared at casting speeds of 0.8 and 1.1 m/min. The constant boundary predicted monotonic surface cooling and could not distinguish successive cooling sections. At 2.0 m below the meniscus, the non-uniform boundary increased predicted wide-face-center, narrow-face-center, and corner temperatures from 850, 880, and 530 °C to 1140, 1280, and 1000 °C at 0.8 m/min, and from 930, 990, and 620 °C to 1150, 1300, and 1080 °C at 1.1 m/min. It also captured local cooling and reheating near the mold exit and zone boundaries, thus providing a more realistic thermal basis for shell-bulging and mold-level-fluctuation analyses. |
