| Abstract Scope |
Neodymium oxychloride (NdOCl) is a two-dimensional (2D) layered material with dielectric, luminescent, spintronic and catalytic properties. Scalable synthesis and processing of 2D NdOCl is crucial to understand their intrinsic properties and to allow real world applications. This research focuses on a molten salt assisted-chemical vapor deposition for synthesizing bulk NdOCl, then a solvent-assisted chemical intercalation for delamination into 2D flakes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) confirmed the formation of individual NdOCl flakes, while selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) verified the presence of high-quality ultra-thin NdOCl crystals. This work lays the foundation for scalable growth of NdOCl and their exfoliation into 2D crystals, and can be used as a stepping stone for expanding into other rare-earth oxyhalide materials in a scalable manner. |
