Abstract Scope |
AA2014 is a high strength heat treatable alloy which is frequently used for aerospace and defence applications. AA2014 when extruded through direct extrusion process, followed by solution heat treatment suffer from abnormal grain growth at the periphery of the extrusion section. This defect is termed as Peripheral Coarse Grain (PCG) industrially and it is a persistent problem, However, the extent of PCG can be reduced or eliminated by control of extrusion process parameters as well as the input composition of the alloy. In this study, the homogenization practice of this alloy is varied to study its effect on PCG and mechanical properties. The dispersoids density and size distribution is investigated for two different homogenization heat treatments using SEM and these are corelated with the mechanical properties. The findings are supported by TEM investigations wherein the type of dispersoids and the strengthening precipitates are shown to affect PCG and mechanical properties. |
