| Abstract Scope |
Nb based refractory high entropy alloys (RHEAs) have garnered interest due to their room temperature ductility and strength retention at elevated temperatures. Unfortunately, these materials lack the high strength compared to current Ni-based superalloys. Recent research has looked specifically at NbTaTiV and attempted to include group VI elements (Cr, Mo, and W) to increase the high temperature strength. However, the inclusion of these elements has shown to cause a phase instability particularly with Ti segregating to the grain boundaries (GBs) which form a network of brittle material. To prevent the segregation of Ti in these materials, the origins of why the Ti segregates to the GBs were investigated in the NbTaTiV system with dilute W addition regards to two primary hypotheses: 1. The Ti segregation is caused by W repelling oxygen/nitrogen interstitials at the GBs. 2. The Ti segregation is caused directly by the miscibility gap with W addition. |
