| Abstract Scope |
Metal additive manufacturing (AM) methods typically require some combination of inert environments, heavy safety requirements, or extensive post processing to yield usable parts, and as such fail to prove portable and accessible forms of manufacturing. We demonstrate a technique where a layer of thermite reactants within a polymer binder are ignited, burning away the polymer binder, and leaving a deposited layer of metal, repeating this process to make a fully metal part, essentially performing the debinding and sintering/melting of a green part in situ. These thermite reactions produce bulk metallic solids without an inert environment, and the polymer binder negates the safety concerns of working directly with metal powder. We discuss the unique solidification dynamics and resulting microstructural distribution of oxide and metallic components. |
