| Abstract Scope |
An important element in damage tolerance practices is the ability to perform accurate and efficient asset-level fatigue crack growth solutions. Confidence in these modeling procedures is provided by validation against experimental measurements that resemble asset-representative loading conditions, geometry and the material system. Since this data tends to be proprietary, different sets of coupon-level fatigue crack growth measurements reported in open round-robin challenges and literature were considered to demonstrate validation benchmarking of our implementation of this procedure. Solution sensitivity due to deviations from nominal specimen geometry, intrinsic fatigue crack growth rate scatter, degrees of freedom used to capture crack front shape evolution, boundary conditions will be presented to highlight challenges which need to be addressed to both properly model the experimental setup and the proper shape of the growing crack. Marker bands and crack growth paths were used to make detailed comparisons between the experiment and the modeled crack growth. |
