| Abstract Scope |
Neutron irradiation data suggests that sink strength exceeding ~1016 m-2 can reduce irradiation hardening at low temperatures (~250-350°C), but it is unclear whether this effect arises from enhanced absorption of point defects at sinks, or if the high initial yield strength of materials such as ODS alloys causes the relative hardening contributions of irradiation-induced defects such as dislocation loops to be smaller. To investigate this, several FeCrAl alloys with varying sink strengths were simultaneously irradiated with 10 MeV Cu ions to a mid-range dose of 10 dpa at 300°C. STEM and nanoindentation results (with Nix-Gao correction) indicate that introducing precipitate sink strengths up to ~5×1015 m-2 reduced the degree of irradiation hardening from 1.74 GPa to 0.87 GPa while simultaneously reducing the total post-irradiation dislocation density from ~2×1015 m-2 to ~4×1014 m-2. Interpretation of nanoindentation data is complemented by cross-sectional STEM images of indent impressions. |
