We have developed LPSO-type magnesium alloys, which consist of α-Mg and long-period stacking-ordered (LPSO) phases. These alloys exhibit an exceptional synergy of high strength, heat resistance, and flame resistance. The LPSO phase features a high-density hard–soft nano-laminate, in which hard L1₂-type cluster-arranged layers (CALs) alternate with soft Mg layers at sub-nanometer intervals. Their remarkable strength originates from a unique deformation mechanism known as kink strengthening. Recent work has further revealed that kink strengthening is not exclusive to dense LPSO architectures. A sparse hard–soft nano-layered structure—featuring CAL spacings nearly 100 times larger than in the LPSO phase—also promotes kink strengthening and achieves yield strengths above 400 MPa. To distinguish this architecture from the conventional LPSO structure, it has been termed the “Mille-feuille (MF) structure,” inspired by the layered French pastry. This presentation will overview the LPSO and MF structures, and their common kink-strengthening mechanism. |
