| Abstract Scope |
Yield strength and fracture toughness are key properties of structural materials. Processing conditions that control micro and mesostructure in additive manufactured (AM) metals, however, are often optimized for strength and ductility and ductility then often used as indicator for fracture toughness even though these properties are usually not directly proportional. Here, we evaluate the correlation between fracture toughness and ductility of Al-, Fe-, and Ti-based alloys and highlight how the often-metastable microstructures, layer-by-layer mesostructures, and anisotropic failure characteristics of AM materials can lead to pronounced variability in the fracture toughness data for materials with similar ductility. We use examples such as LPBF-fabricated AlSi10Mg and an 18Ni-300 maraging steel to show how printing parameters and post-processing can impact deformation characteristics and hence mechanical performance, and how the use of mixed powders can result in mesostructures that enable excellent damage-tolerance in a duplex stainless steel without the need for a post-processing heat-treatment. |
