| Abstract Scope |
Molten salts are widely used in advanced energy technologies, notably for their high-temperature stability and low vapor pressure. However, corrosion, by mechanisms including intergranular corrosion (IGC), can severely degrade structural materials exposed to molten salts. To simulate the morphological evolution driven by IGC in polycrystalline pure metals, a three-dimensional, multi-order-parameter phase-field model with a modified Butler–Volmer relation was developed. The model utilizes a parameter, α, to control local IGC susceptibility. Simulations show preferential corrosion along grain boundaries (GBs), leading to grain shedding. Simulations with uniform α values are used to examine the effects of α and initial grain size distributions. The effect of inhomogeneous α is also examined by assigning different α values to different GBs. Quantitative analyses demonstrate a strong linear correlation between the size of detached grains and their initial sizes. The model is a step forward towards examining IGC in alloys in contact with molten salt. |
