| Abstract Scope |
Al-Cu-Li alloys possess desirable properties such as low density, high strength, and corrosion resistance. However, their manufacturing is very challenging due to the lithium reactivity at high temperature. In this project, the recycling of Li waste streams into Al-Cu-Li product streams is explored. To minimize Li loss, the oxygen level and the selection of crucible materials were found to be critical factors and will be discussed in this presentation. Furthermore, stirring was found to be necessary to mitigate segregation. Inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analysis of solidified Al–Cu–Li samples indicated that the lithium loss can be limited to below 9%, validating the feasibility of transforming waste lithium sources into new Al–Cu–Li alloys through the designed smelting method. The post-processing heat treatment to improve the mechanical properties and optimize the microstructure of obtained Al-Cu-Li alloys will also be discussed in this presentation. |
