| Abstract Scope |
Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) followed by sol-gel dip-coating is promising for improving the corrosion resistance of Mg alloy skeletal fixations devices; thus, minimally affecting its mechanical properties before the bone has healed. However, the influence of MAO parameters on the morphology and corrosion performance of MAO/sol-gel composite coatings remains unclear. This study investigates the effect of MAO current density profiles on MAO/sol-gel coatings on heat-treated Mg-1.5Zn-0.5Ca-0.5Mn alloy. A constant current density of 50 mA/cm2 for 8 min was used as the baseline and compared with two-stage current profiles consisting of an initial 50 mA/cm2 followed by 30 mA/cm2, with stage durations of 3-5 and 6-2 min. The 6-2 profile produced a more uniform pore structure with wider pore openings than the baseline and 3-5 conditions. Coating morphology, pore sealing behavior, and corrosion performance will be evaluated by hydrogen evolution and weight-loss tests in corrected simulated body fluid (c-SBF) at 37.5 °C. |
