Abstract Scope |
We leverage synchrotron transmission x-ray imaging at the nanoscale to observe real-time solidification dynamics of the Al-Al3Ni eutectic alloy. During freezing, two solid crystals simultaneously emerge from the liquid in a periodic pattern with unique spacing dictated by the competing phenomena of solute diffusion in the liquid and capillary effects at the involved interfaces. The formation of facets in the solid upon different freezing conditions is a key question of fundamental and technological importance. However, capturing the transient solid-liquid interface poses significant challenges for conventional in-situ x-ray tomography. We will share new efforts to characterize the 3D morphology of the growth front of an Al-Al3Ni eutectic. Furthermore, recent work to understand the orientation relationship and habit planes between the solid Al and solid Al3Ni crystals, as quantified by Electron Back Scatter Diffraction and Molecular Dynamics, will be highlighted. |
