Abstract Scope |
This paper presents a methodology for generating bio-inspired lightweight lattice structure designs using the Bio-inspired Design Theory (BDT) toolbox for metal additive manufacturing. Based on biological information from species in nature, biological strategies can be translated to an analogy in the design space within material and additive manufacturing constraints. The proposed approach introduces a systematic operational framework to define elements tied to the functional objective of lightweighting in the lattice design space. These elements are derived from biological models and serve as a database of building blocks that can be tuned to dictate function-specific structure and design of the lattice, as per application requirements. To validate the approach, the paper demonstrates results from proof-of-concept experimental test structures manufactured using metal additive manufacturing (AM), assessing the manufacturability and performance of the generated structures in representative application domains. |
