| Abstract Scope |
Direct reduction iron (DRI) production is a promising low-CO₂ route for sustainable metallurgy, where DRI melting and steel-slag separation occurs in the electric arc furnace (EAF). This study examined how slag thermophysical properties, including basicity, viscosity, melting point, and surface tension, influence steel-slag separation for different DRI grades. In-situ melting behavior was observed using high-temperature confocal laser scanning microscopy (HT-CLSM), while multi-scale characterization tracked the evolution of steel and slag during melting. Results show that optimal smelting temperatures should exceed 1530 °C for low-grade DRI and 1580 °C for high-grade DRI to achieve efficient melting and separation. Uniformly distributed alumina in slag requires higher temperatures because its high melting point, viscosity, and surface tension impede iron–slag separation and reduce steel cleanliness. The study also summarizes inclusion agglomeration behavior in DRI and hydrogen plasma smelting reduction melts. These findings provide guidance for slag optimization and improved EAF processing of hydrogen-reduced iron. |
