| Abstract Scope |
Oxygen impurities are widely recognized as key factors governing corrosion in molten chloride salts; however, their influence has generally been evaluated using total oxygen concentration without distinguishing chemical speciation. This work examines how different oxygen-bearing species affect the corrosion behavior of 316 stainless steel in molten NaCl–MgCl2 at 600°C. Controlled amounts of moisture, hydroxide, and oxide were introduced individually into a purified eutectic salt while maintaining comparable oxygen contents. These additives were selected to represent three distinct chemical forms in which oxygen may exist in molten chloride salts. Corrosion behavior was assessed through mass-loss measurements and post-exposure microstructural characterization. The results suggest that corrosion behavior varies with the chemical form of oxygen rather than oxygen concentration alone, emphasizing the need to distinguish oxygen speciation when evaluating impurity effects in molten chloride salts. |
