Abstract Scope |
Mn-stabilized fully-austenitic steels are attractive for naval applications due to their reduced material costs compared with Ni-stabilized austenitic steels. A combination of insoluble Cu particles and ordered intermetallic β (B2) precipitates are known to effectively strengthen BCC ferritic alloys through the synergistic formation of a fine, nano-scale microstructure. The precipitation behavior and interactions between these phases in the FCC austenitic system, however, is fundamentally different and relatively unexplored. A series of Mn-stabilized austenitic alloys containing both the FCC-Cu and β-B2 phases at various aging times will be compared via atom probe tomography (APT) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Elucidated interactions between these phases will be examined in the broader context of ICME alloy design. |
