This study combined pyrometer temperature measurement, thermal modeling, quantitative microstructural characterization, and crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) testing to assess the effect of thermal cycles on inter-critically reheated coarse-grained heat-affected zone (ICCGHAZ) microstructure and CTOD toughness. Three multi-pass girth welds were produced with fill-pass heat inputs of 0.9 kJ/mm, 0.7 kJ/mm, and 0.5 kJ/mm. A 3D transient spatial-temporal heat transfer model of the two fill-pass process was developed and validated using pyrometer results to simulate ICCGHAZ thermal cycles. The 0.5 kJ/mm heat input, with the highest modeled heating rate, fastest cooling rate, and shortest time above Ac1, resulted in minimum CGHAZ width (0.5 mm), ICHAZ width (0.3 mm), and ICCGHAZ area (0.2 mm2). CTOD values (-6°C) ranged from 0.42 mm for 0.5 kJ/mm to 0.097 mm for 0.9 kJ/mm. This paper will present the effects of modeled thermal cycles on the structure and properties of the ICCGHAZ. |
