| Abstract Scope |
This work presents a new way to smooth rough surfaces without material removal. Rough surfaces are often the cause of fatigue failures in additive parts. Therefore, surfaces are typically treated by etching and/or abrasive techniques. These existing techniques require material removal, which must be compensated by over-building. To smooth surfaces without material removal, our new transient liquid phase approach smooths metal surfaces and can also impart compressive residual stress and/or hardness enhancements. The operation of transient liquid phase smoothing is two steps: coat the part with a eutectic-forming film, and then heat treat the part to activate local surface melting (ideally with a heat treatment step that would be performed already, such as a stress-relief). This presentation and manuscript will share results on various metal systems, with an emphasis on connecting the overall performance to the underlying process and structure. |
