| Abstract Scope |
The welding industry faces a major shortage of professionals, with AWS noting a need for more than 300,000 welding professionals within the next several years. This need has provided impetus toward more automation of welding processes and production, which in turn leads to the need to train today’s workforce in how to effectively and efficiently integrate robotic welding technologies in order to decrease costs and meet production, safety and quality goals. This paper describes the start-up and creation of a welding robotics training center. It covers the background and identification of needs and challenges, including the professional, technical and holistic needs of the affected workers. It then describes lessons learned in creating a center that involved both academic and industry partners – challenges, opportunities and key insights. |
