| Abstract Scope |
Quasicrystals in aluminum-based alloys exhibit semi-ordered yet aperiodic structures, which makes their solidification and growth inherently different to periodic crystals. Although there are a variety of hypothesized models, there is little experimental data to validate these claims. Real-time synchrotron-based X-ray tomographic imaging was used to observe the solidification of quasicrystals from a liquid, enabled by recent improvements in the temporal resolution of this technique. Four-dimensional reconstructions of this data enable the analysis of various growth characteristics and the difference in growth rate in the periodic and aperiodic directions. These visualizations are unprecedented using real data, especially at such high spatial and temporal resolutions, which will provide validation and refinement for simulated growth models. |
