| Abstract Scope |
This paper reviews the effects of magnetic fields imposed during solidification on dendrite growth and microstructure evolution. An intense magnetic field of several tesla modifies mass transport around dendrite tips, causing the growth kinetics to deviate from diffusion-controlled behavior. In contrast, a static magnetic field on the order of 0.1 tesla induces thermoelectrically driven melt flow through the generation of electric currents. The effects of magnetic fields on solidification are discussed on the basis of time-resolved in situ observations. |
