| Abstract Scope |
V 4Cr 4Ti (V44) is a leading candidate for fusion and high energy beamline applications where transmutation induced helium and hydrogen strongly influence microstructural evolution. Using ion irradiations and in-situ stress application, we investigated the coupled effects of displacement damage and transmutation gas production on high temperature helium embrittlement (HTHE) in V44 across 400–750 °C.
Energetic ion irradiations introduce controlled He and H inventories, enabling systematic evaluation of dose, gas concentration, and temperature on defect evolution. Microstructural analysis focuses on defect cluster formation, dislocation loop development, and helium bubble nucleation under conditions relevant to fusion and spallation environments. The results reveal how transmutation products modify defect evolution pathways and grain boundary bubble formation, providing insight into the influence of transmutation gases on HTHE. The results support the development of structural materials for fusion concepts, advanced fission systems, and high-energy beamline components where transmutation degradation is a key performance constraint. |
