Symposium Ultrahigh-Temperature Processing and Manufacturing
Presentation Title Flash is Not Just Thermal Runaway

On-Site Speaker (Planned) Ju Li
Abstract Scope We will show recent experimental evidences that electrical current driven Flash (as coined by Rishi Raj) cannot be just a thermal behavior, in the sense that point defects at thermodynamic equilibrium at any temperature cannot fully explain the physical properties of the material under Flash. While coupled thermal-electrical instability does occur (that is dependent on external boundary conditions), something out of thermal equilibrium, i.e. certain ionic/electronic/photonic disorders, are intrinsic to Flash. In ceramics, we can call it "solid-state plasma" ["Enhanced mobility of cations and anions in the redox state: The polaronium mechanism," Acta Materialia 232 (2022) 117941; "Transverse and Longitudinal Degradations in Ceramic Solid Electrolytes," Chem. Mater. 34 (2022) 5749]
