| Abstract Scope |
Exceptional high-temperature thermophysical properties and resistance to sputtering make tungsten alloys leading candidates for plasma-facing materials in nuclear fusion devices. While the effects of neutron irradiation on these materials have been studied generally, the impact of neutron energy spectra on the build up of transmuted rhenium and osmium – and thus on radiation-induced microstructural evolution – has been largely avoided for practicality. This work examines W-3Re samples irradiated (~500-1100 °C, ~0.4-0.7 dpa) in standard and gadolinium-shielded capsules at the High Flux Isotope Reactor to probe the effects of mixed and shielded (thermal minimized) neutron spectra. Advanced microstructural characterization of radiation-induced defects and transmutation-driven precipitation will be presented, and the importance of shielded test reactor irradiation for simulating fusion-relevant spectra will be discussed. |
