| Abstract Scope |
Railroads in the United States spend approximately $2.6 billion a year on rail replacement and repairs, making rail the most valuable asset for the railroad industry in North America. For decades the railways and manufacturers improved components to accomplish higher performances. Rail metallurgies increased the hardness from 248 Hardness Brinell (HB) to more than 400 HB that has clear benefits on wear resistance an effective life extension to withstand average forces (600 MPa) to peak forces (2.5 GPa). Major limitations of rails and wheels are fatigue, and fracture toughness. In this presentation we will cover strategies used to develop new heavy haul metallurgies, modern welding methods, laser cladding coatings, advanced strain measure methods, testing methods such as tribology. Extreme and harsh contact mechanics effects on steel components integrity will be presented and the effects on integrity will be discussed. |
