| Abstract Scope |
It is well known that 7xxx series Al alloys exhibit significant susceptibility to corrosion and environment assisted cracking (EAC) when used in service. Recent experiments conducted are generally limited to non-engineering aluminum alloyed with Ce but have shown an increased resistance to corrosion. However, understanding the effect of Ce on corrosion behavior in engineering aluminum alloys like the 7xxx series Al alloys has not been rigorously studied. The objective of this study is to evaluate the corrosion resistance and microstructure of a 7xxx series like Al alloy with Ce addition. The corrosion behavior will be correlated with the results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) data to better understand the microstructure-corrosion behavior relationships. Such information will then be used to inform the development of future alloy compositions, heat treatment protocols and inform future EAC experiments. |
