Material degradation phenomena, such as dealloying and intergranular corrosion (IGC), present significant challenges in the development of molten salt reactors. They also pose scientific challenges because of the coupling of multiple physical processes, including transport and electrochemistry, alongside the emergence of complex microstructures. This talk presents phase-field modeling approaches to simulate these phenomena. First, we introduce a phase-field model for dealloying that simplifies simulations by coupling phase-specific diffusion and thermodynamics via selective interfacial reactions. Applied to binary alloys, our model captures microstructural evolution driven by diffusional instabilities. Second, we examine localized IGC, inspired by experimental characterizations of pure Ni in molten salt. By varying grain boundary (GB) corrosion susceptibility in a 3D, multi-order-parameter phase-field model, we systematically investigate how GB network connectivity affects the corrosion process. These models provide powerful predictive tools for understanding complex structural degradation. Finally, we consider the effect of alloying on IGC. |
