| Abstract Scope |
As tramp elements in low-grade ferrous scrap have become a major challenge for future electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking, it is necessary to evaluate evaporation refining technology during the vacuum degassing process. Although the evaporation of Cu and Sn is significantly enhanced under reduced pressure, a comprehensive kinetic understanding under practical refining conditions remains limited. In the present study, a kinetic model for the vacuum evaporation of Cu and Sn from C and S containing molten iron was developed. Evaporation rates were accurately measured using an electromagnetic levitation melting technique equipped with a pre-evacuation chamber, enabling systematic evaluation of the effects of pressure, temperature, and melt composition. The model was subsequently applied to an industrial scale RH degassing simulator incorporating molten steel circulation and bubble behavior. Parametric analyses were conducted to identify operating conditions that maximize the refining efficiency of tramp elements. |
