Abstract Scope |
To increase production, in 2023 INALUM upgraded an existing potline, which includes adding 5 brand-new PTMs (Pot Tending Machines). Unfortunately, the new PTMs missed a crucial feature; the ejector has no capability to blow air from the crucible’s nozzle. In the existing potline, this is important to prevent accidental bath ingestion resulting in clogging and costly crucible repair. This results in the decision to re-instate 2 old PTMs slated for disposal, just for metal tapping in the new potline, with a total of 7 PTMs working in a single potline, adding maintenance workload. Adding the blow capability was done by installing another valve, which will redirect the air back into the crucible when activated. The control is designed in such a way to ensure minimal disruption of established procedure. This modification greatly reduced accidental bath ingestion on new PTMs, eliminating the need to utilize old PTMs for metal tapping. |
