| Abstract Scope |
Titanium alloys are particularly suited for aerospace applications, due to their high strength-to-weight ratio. However, their use at high temperatures is limited by rapid oxidation. While alloying can be beneficial in increasing oxidation resistance, the oxidation mechanisms have remained elusive. We investigated the role of dilute Si and Nb additions in the oxidation response of alpha Ti at 800oC. The oxidation behavior in Ar-20%O2 and in N2-20%O2 were compared to clarify the influence of atmospheric nitrogen on the oxidation of titanium alloys and its synergistic effect with alloying elements. Two-stage oxidation exposures using isotopic 18O2 were also used to examine diffusion paths, and detailed multiscale characterization of the alloys and oxide scales identified mechanisms that may serve as the scientific basis for designing long-lasting, oxidation-resistant Ti alloys. |
