Abstract Scope |
This work describes a novel additive manufacturing process able to deposit polymer matrix composites, from conceptualization to proof-of-concept. The process makes use of an indirect curing mechanism induced by laser heating of absorbent reinforcement particles within an optically transparent and colourless polymer to produce self-standing freeform structures. This work presents a theoretical framework of the process requirements through an analytical model that describes the optical and thermal interactions. The model is used to determine the first principles of the system requirements in terms of laser source used, material composition, and process productivity. A proof-of-concept was demonstrated using a polymer blend mixed with copper powder, where crosslinking and structural solidification were achieved through localized heating by a low-power blue laser (450 nm, <3 W). The curing of the polymeric carrier was confirmed through calorimetric analysis. The developed technique shows promise for several sectors, from microelectronics to biomedical implant manufacturing. |
