| Abstract Scope |
We demonstrate the capabilities of a lightweight, laboratory-scale optical method for real-time imaging of microstructure formation and growth dynamics during thin-sample directional solidification of Al-based alloys. Our dual-scale optics setup combines two visible-light microscopy devices that simultaneously image the growth patterns at micrometer and millimeter scales, thus accommodating the wide temperature range over which intermetallic phases form. In addition, a moving-optics mode, synchronized with the solidification velocity, permits a precise, long-duration tracking of individual crystals. Applied to a model Al-3.2Si-1.5Fe-0.7Mn (wt%) alloy, this methodology revealed (i) the nucleation and faceted growth dynamics of primary α-Al₁₅(Fe,Mn)₃Si₂ (α-IM) crystals, (ii) their interaction with local and large-scale solute diffusion fields, and (iii) the initiation of (α-IM)-(FCC-Al) eutectic coupled growth in the dendritic FCC-Al mushy zone. Preliminary synchrotron X-ray tomography experiments at the ESRF establish a link between thin-sample observations and microstructure formation in bulk alloys. |
