Deformation twinning significantly influences the mechanical response of face-centered cubic (fcc) metals. While the effects of alloying on twinning are predominantly attributed to changes in stacking fault energy, this attribute alone cannot explain a tendency for increased twinning in the presence of mobile solutes. This study leverages atomistic simulations and continuum modeling to reveal a novel segregation-assisted dislocation reaction, whereby a 60° dislocation dissociates into a stair-rod dislocation and a Shockley partial that drives twin nucleation or thickening on a conjugate plane. This phenomenon is explored in multiple alloying systems with interstitial hydrogen and carbon. We further demonstrate how this phenomenon may promote twin thickening over multiple atomic planes via concomitant reactions or a pole version of this mechanism. These insights open the door to novel alloying strategies to tailor the twinning response, with the potential to optimize the mechanical performance across a range of fcc systems and operating conditions. |
