Dilute alloying additions can significantly influence precipitation pathways by modifying both nucleation and precipitate evolution. In dilute Al-Zr alloys, sluggish L12-Al3Zr precipitation limits the development of precipitation-strengthened microstructures. Previous work demonstrated that Sn microalloying promotes Zr-Sn-vacancy clustering during homogenization and is associated with accelerated L12-Al3Zr nucleation through the proposed Low-melting-point Element Assisted Nucleation (LEAN) mechanism. Here, complementary scanning transmission electron microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, and atom probe tomography are used to investigate the influence of Sn during subsequent isothermal aging at 425 °C. Relative to binary Al-Zr alloys, Sn-containing alloys exhibit a higher density of finer L12-Al3Zr precipitates together with slower precipitate growth and coarsening. Analysis of the precipitate evolution suggests that Sn modifies the apparent diffusion behavior governing precipitate growth, although the precise mechanism remains under investigation. These observations provide a more complete picture of how dilute Sn additions influence precipitation kinetics in Al-Zr alloys. |
