| Abstract Scope |
High-entropy multi-component grain refiners (HMRs) refine α-Al grains in Silafont-36 Al-Si casting alloys, yet the real-time solidification pathway responsible for this refinement remains unclear. Here, in-situ synchrotron white-beam X-ray radiography was used to compare Silafont-36 with and without 0.5 wt% (TiZrNb)₂(CrFeNi) HMR under identical cooling conditions. The base alloy exhibited coarse columnar α-Al dendrite growth along the imposed thermal gradient, whereas the HMR-treated alloy showed earlier and denser α-Al nucleation, a transition to fine near-equiaxed grains, and suppressed dendrite-arm development. Radiography also revealed changes in the apparent solidification sequence, including the temporal evolution of Fe-rich intermetallics and eutectic formation. These observations demonstrate that HMR modifies both nucleation and growth during solidification, providing direct evidence for a grain-refinement mechanism based on heterogeneous nucleation promotion and dendritic growth restriction in aluminum casting alloys. |
