| Abstract Scope |
Bone fracture reduction and fixation using adhesive biominerals has been a longstanding wish of clinicians. Increasing use of screws and wires invites joint instability and risk of infection. We present a calcium phosphate-based bone adhesive, prepared from a mixture of calcium phosphate, chitosan, collagen, polycaprolactone/cellulose, which readily melts in IR-laser radiation and repolymerises by bonding with surrounding natural bone. Examples of in vitro simulations are shown for repairing the comminuted bone by fracture reduction, osteoporotic bone by augmentation, and filling the bone void after a trauma or a cancer.
The video clips demonstrate the potential route to clinical translation for carrying out future in vivo studies by preplanning surgical mapping using fracture site imaging and mock simulation using machine-trained surgical tool for selected clinical indications. Post adhesion strengths and biocompatibility tests using osteogenic cell viability and proliferation were also carried out successfully in bovine bone models |
