Materials science PhDs often choose a career path in one of three landscapes- industry, government laboratories, and academia. While advisors often provide high-level descriptions of these landscapes, they do not often talk about how to transition between them. In this talk, I give a behind the scenes look at going from a government lab to academia and achieving a joint position. I started my career as a post-doctoral fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory studying uranium alloy microstructural development. As I matriculated through a research career there, I looked at academic positions and eventually hoped into the academic wonderland. This talk highlights lessons I learned while transitioning from a national laboratory to academia and then back again. |
